Chapter 2
Installation
About this chapter
This chapter describes
how to install Data Architect for the various supported platforms.
|
Linux/HP-UX/Solaris
|
PRE-INSTALL
Data Architect will only work when an
ODBC
sub-system has been installed. You should also have an ODBC driver
installed for each database type you want to connect to. Fortunately;
all popular Linux distributions contain unixODBC - but it may not be
installed by default. Use the package installer for your Linux system to
ensure that you have unixODBC installed. Some database drivers will come
with your Linux distribution - others will have to be obtained from
your database vendor.
INSTALL
Making applications available for Linux is made difficult by the
fact that there are so many variations of Linux available. We have
attempted to address this by making two types of installation methods (rpm and tar based);
1. DA rpm/tar-ball package
2. thekompany support package ( rpm/tar-ball )
3. plugins tar-ball
The rpm packages are only available on linux.
The default install location for thekompany support package is /usr/local/thekompany.
The rpm package should be used for those systems which support it
(SuSE, Red Hat, Mandrake, etc) and the tar-ball should be used for all
others( including unixes). In order to install the plugins just uncompress the tar-ball
into DA install path, under the "plugins" folder.
EXECUTE
You can execute Data Architect from a terminal or from a desktop icon.
The installation does not create a desktop icon automatically. Refer to
your desktop documentation for information on how to do this. In
anycase; it is usually a good idea to execute Data Architect from a
terminal the first time this is done - this allows any terminal errors
or messages to be viewed and may be useful in determining any problems.
To execute Data Architect from a terminal simple change to the directory
containing "dataarchitect" and execute like this; "./dataarchitect".
You can also add Data Architect install dir bin into the user/system PATH variable.

Windows

PRE-INSTALL
Data Architect will only work when an ODBC
sub-system has been installed. You should also have an ODBC driver
installed for each database type you want to connect to. Fortunately; an
ODBC sub-system is installed by default. An added bonus is that a number
of drivers are included. You should contact your database vendor if a
driver does not exist for database.
INSTALL
Execute the installation and follow the provided steps.
In order to install the plugins just uncompress the zip
into DA install path, under the "plugins" folder.
EXECUTE
Upon completion of the install you will find any; programs, examples,
and documentation in the destination directory, you may find a desktop
icon, and you will find new menu items in your Start menu.

OSX
|
PRE-INSTALL
Data Architect will only work when an ODBC sub-system has been installed. You should
also have an ODBC driver installed for each database type you want to
connect to. Fortunately; an ODBC sub-system is installed by default for
OSX versions 10.4 and later. Unfortunately; this does not include any
drivers so you will have to contact your database vendor to obtain a
driver for your database.
INSTALL
We deliver the package as a tar-ball, which will contain the universal package dmg and tksql as a standalone application.
Open the dmg file as usual. You will find a package file in the
resulting drive. Open the package to install the software.
|
The package
was built on OSX 10.4 (Tiger) and thus uses the most recent version of
the development software. Therefore; this program will not work on older
versions of OSX. |
EXECUTE
Data Architect will be installed into the Applications folder. Use
Finder to navigate to the Applications folder, find the program, and
open it.
